2017 4-H Livestock Show Results
The 59th Annual 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 with youth competing to be champions in market and showmanship classes with hogs, goats, steers, and lambs. This large animal show takes place in early May each year. The 4-H Livestock program requires youth to choose, care for, and train the animal of their choice within the show rules. In addition, youth set-goals and keep records through their project record books. The day of the show each participant exhibits his or her animal(s). Livestock programs allow youth to have a long-standing project in partnership with adults and the community. This program has been great opportunity for youth to gain life skills such as responsibility, leadership, and self-discipline while they learn about the livestock industry!
This year brought lots of change to the 4-H livestock program after the successes of the Washington and Beaufort county 4-H programs resulted in outgrowing our space and ultimately a split with Beaufort County. This year’s one-county show allowed for the expansion of the Washington County program to include over 60 animal entries! In addition, this new structure led to the creation of many new jobs associated with the livestock show, which were quickly filled with dedicated Washington County 4-H volunteers.
As always, the show was very thankful for the continued partnership with the local American Legion Post 164 and VFW Post 4023. This relationship provides our facilities and concessions on the day of the show. Participants in the show also had the opportunity to vote for a male and female participant to receive the Go-Getter Award. This year’s winners were Reagan Glass and Wyatt Clifton! The judge of this year’s show was Taylor Joyner, NCSU Senior, and Coach of the NC State University Livestock Judging Team.
