2016 Beaufort Washington Livestock Show Results

The 58th Annual 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Wednesday, May 4th, 2016 with youth competing to be champions in market and showmanship classes with hogs, goats, steers, and lambs. This large animal show takes place in early May each year. The 4-H Livestock program requires youth to choose, care for, and train the animal of their choice within the show rules. In addition, youth set-goals and keep records through their project record books. The day of the show each participant exhibits his or her animal(s). Livestock programs allow youth to have a long-standing project in partnership with adults and the community. This program has been great opportunity for youth to gain life skills such as responsibility, leadership, and self-discipline while they learn about the livestock industry!

As always the show was very thankful for the continued partnership with the local American Legion Post 164 and VFW Post 4023. This relationship provides our facilities and concessions on the day of the show. Participants in the show also had the opportunity to vote for a male and female participant to receive the Go-Getter Award. This year’s winners were Sherfield Smith of Beaufort County and Chyna Harvey of Beaufort County! The Kiss the Steer contest is always a highlight of show day. This event is used as a yearly fundraiser for barn and show improvements. This year’s winner was, Washington County 4-H’er, Reagan Glass. The judge of this year’s show was Jake Erceg Coach of the NC State University Livestock Judging Team.

This year’s show was dedicated in memory of the late Mrs. Gail S. White. In addition to her 36 years of support, she also served for many years as a member of the Washington County Homemakers, President of the County Advisory Council, as well as, 4-H Club Leader for the Cherry 4-H Club and several other roles within Extension. During her 36 years with the show she missed only 2 shows once for a trip and once due to illness. The show is very thankful for her many years of support. Mrs. Gail’s grand-daughters Jordan White and Hannah McGowan participated in this year’s show.
