4-H Rabbit and Chicken Show
Twenty-five youth participated in the 13th annual 4-H Rabbit and Chicken Show on March 30th! The show was rescheduled after the NCDA’s Avian Influenza policies prohibited youth from having a show in the fall last year. However, the rescheduling didn’t dampen the spirits of 4-H’ers from across the area who gave a day of their spring break to show off their small animal projects. Each youth participated in both composition and showmanship classes for their animals. Best-In-Show for the Open Chicken Classes went to Emma Barrett and Best-in-Show for the Rabbit Classes went to Brice Sosebee. Showmanship champions included chicken exhibitors Anna Claire Barrett and Kameron LeFever and rabbit exhibitors Brice Sosebee and Lexi Ziff.
Youth also had the opportunity to participate in our 3rd Layer Hen Show. This year’s breed were Buckeye hens. Buckeyes are a heritage breed named after Ohio’s nickname of “Buckeye State.” The breed was developed in Ohio and was first shown in 1902. Layer Hen Show participants received their Buckeye chicks in May of last year and cared for them in preparation for this show! This type of show eliminates any advantage of genetics and allows for the youth who did the best job of taking care of their animal to be rewarded. Best-In-Show for the Layer Hen Classes went to Anna Claire Barrett.
