56th Annual Beaufort – Washington Livestock Show and Sale

The 56th Annual 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 with youth competing to be champions in market and showmanship classes with hogs, goats, steers, and lambs. Youth also have the opportunity to participate in tractor and lawn mower driving. This large animal show takes place in early May each year. The 4-H Livestock program requires youth to choose, care for, and train the animal of their choice within the show rules. In addition, youth set-goals and keep records through their project record books. The day of the show each participant exhibits his or her animal(s). Livestock programs allow youth to have a long-standing project in partnership with adults and the community. This program has been great opportunity for youth to gain life skills such as responsibility, leadership, and self-discipline while they learn about the livestock industry!

This year the show was excited to celebrate the Centennial Year of Cooperative Extension! Special awards, giveaways, and decorations commemorated the milestone. This 56th Show was dedicated to retired Washington County Administrative Assistant, Janet Hardison in honor of her 39 years of service! As always the show was very thankful for the continued partnership with the local American Legion Post 164 and VFW Post 4023. This relationship provides our facilities and concessions on the day of the show. Participants in the show also had the opportunity to vote for a male and female participant to receive the Go-Getter Award. This year’s winners were Cameron Howell of Beaufort County and Reagan Glass of Washington County! This recognition is given at each county’s Achievement Nights. The Kiss the Steer contest is always a highlight of show day. This event is used as a yearly fundraiser for barn and show improvements. This year’s Kiss the Steer Contest provided the show with over seven hundred dollars; this year’s winner was Madison Boyd of Washington County. Recognition was also given to long time show supporter Leroy Alons as he retired his microphone after being the sale auctioneer since 1959.
